A Harmony of Style and Timelessness

A Harmony of Style and Timelessness

The interior and furnishings of the Grand Hotel Plaza are a marvel of finesse and artistry. The passage of time has not detracted from the compactness and harmony of the designs adopted by architects and decorators from the early 19th century, to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco years, including influences of rationalism. Every detail of the hotel tells the story of different eras, masterfully combined to create a unique and fascinating ambience.

The History of the Building: From Palazzo Lozzano to Grand Hotel Plaza

The History of the Building: From Palazzo Lozzano to Grand Hotel Plaza

In 1862, the historical fortunes of the old Palazzo Lozzano drew to a close, marking the beginning of the reconstruction work that would culminate in the current building. The work was entrusted to the architect Antonio Sarti, who had already been involved in building the original Palazzo Lozzano in 1832. Sarti transformed the building significantly, and the new, elegant "Albergo di Roma" was born in the place of the Palazzo Lozzano.

Architect Sarti initially planned to extend the original façade to cover a large part of the street. However, the project underwent a number of changes during its realisation, and in 1864 the "Albergo di Roma" was opened for business, maintaining its largely unchanged form for the next forty years.

The Art Nouveau Transformation and the Birth of the Hotel Plaza

Under the leadership of the architect Edgardo Negri, the interior of the Palazzo was redesigned in 1902 and acquired the sumptuous Art Nouveau style that still characterises it today. It was on this occasion that "l'Albergo di Roma" assumed its current name of "Hotel Plaza". The Art Nouveau decoration, stucco work, and tapestries in the lounges were designed by architect and stage designer Renzo Mongiardino (1916-1998), one of the most influential space creators of the second half of the 20th century.

Renzo Mongiardino's Touch: Between Tradition and Innovation

With his ability to transform environments into places of extraordinary beauty and charm, Renzo Mongiardino's career has been characterised by great success. His clients include some of the most prestigious personalities of the last century, such as Onassis, Agnelli, Valentino, Zanussi, and Rothschild. Mongiardino skilfully juxtaposed common objects with precious antiques, creating a multifaceted kaleidoscope of textiles, paintings, carved panels and trompe l'oeil. The result was a style of great aesthetic appeal, one that was without vulgarity and in which the variety of elements would never lead to confusion.

A Combination of Arts and Mastery

A Combination of Arts and Mastery

The decor of the Grand Hotel Plaza represents a skilful combination of the so-called minor and major arts: paintings, stuccoes, stained glass and furnishings harmoniously coexist, creating the most interesting aspect of the building. This decorative ensemble not only enriches the surroundings, but also seems to be inspired by a very specific concept, in which each element helps to create a unique and refined setting.
