The History of Cinema at the Grand Hotel Plaza

The Grand Hotel Plaza has always been a natural film set, a landmark location that has hosted some of the biggest international film productions. A number of films have been filmed in its premises, and its elegant and timeless architecture provided the perfect setting for some fascinating stories.

Visconti and Arthouse Cinema

Visconti and Arthouse Cinema

One of the most momentous highlights for the Grand Hotel Plaza was when the great Luchino Visconti chose our lounge to shoot the sophisticated film L'Innocente. The 1930s had already seen these same rooms transformed into sets for the film Telefoni bianchi. Visconti returned again to the Plaza to film some scenes of the famous Il Gattopardo, further expanding the hotel's connection with arthouse cinema.

During the filming of his film Un tè con Mussolini, the maestro Franco Zeffirelli, declared the Plaza to be the most beautiful hotel in Europe, an accolade that speaks volumes about the unique charm of our establishment. Federico Fellini, another great name in cinema, was fond of frequenting the Grand Hotel Plaza, where he met American directors and actors and found inspiration for his characters. The presence of these great filmmakers has made the Plaza not only a place to stay, but also a meeting point for the world of cinema.

More recently, the Grand Hotel Plaza has served as the backdrop for major international productions. The interior of the hotel was chosen for films such as Ocean's 12, starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, and Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. The film Along Came Polly, with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller, used the Plaza as a location, as well as the sequel to John Wick, with Keanu Reeves. Gabriele Muccino's latest film, I migliori anni, released in February 2020, staged some of its most significant scenes at the Grand Hotel Plaza, telling the story of Italy from 1982 to the present day through an exceptional cast that includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Kim Rossi Stuart and Claudio Santamaria.
